Did you know that the average annual costs people are spending on fuel is more than $2,000? Hence, engineers continue to create innovative approaches and help people consume less fuel. This article introduces top vehicles that can actually save your wallet from burdening while filling up your car. Also, it shows you how much money can you save on an annual basis. We brought up a similar method (MPGe – miles per gallon, combining city and highway mpg)

Fuel economy calculation

1. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq – 59 mpg(e)

Hyundai boasts its lower fuel-consuming position. This hatchback is equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that releases a power output of 139 hp. This hybrid vehicle has been in this position for 2 years. Its earlier generation had also demonstrated high performance in the fuel economy category. The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq’s fuel economy is almost comparable to its new generation – 58 mpg.

It should have been in 2nd place, but I decided to put it in one position. The average annual cost on fuel is $750. That’s significantly lower compared to the average annual cost of other models. Not only does it offer the most fuel-efficiency, but it also gives affordability.

2. 2024 Toyota Prius – 57 mpg(e)

Japanese brands are top-tier when it comes to sustainability. Their innovative engineering makes vehicles more reliable. Through these efforts, they have embraced a term called “kaizen” – continuous development. The 2024 Toyota Prius is in this line and this model got ahead of the curve after its release. The 2-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine pumps out a phenomenal 196 hp (considering front-wheel drive). It can speed up to 100 km within 7.3 s and it is remarkable if we pay close attention to this model. The annual fuel cost for this vehicle is $800. Just imagine how much money you would save up in 4-5 years by running this model. Next place has been granted to the 2022 Toyota Prius Eco. This model also displayed high performance with 56 mpg total. It differs from its brother by possessing a slightly lower engine (1.8-liter).

3. 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue – 54 mpg(e)

The handsome new model of 2025 showed that it can grapple with others in terms of fuel economy. This hybrid has a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine. Technically, it releases a power output of 139 h. 32 kW energy can be charged by its electric motor. Its transmission is a 6-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). This transmission is known for its high performance. It provides tight control over your vehicle in bad weather conditions. By owning this car, drivers save tons of money. Its annual fuel costs are calculated to be $850. The 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue shares this stage with the 2024 Toyota Prius AWD. Their indicators are the same – 54 mpg(e). But they are not similar when it comes to city and highway fuel economy.

4. 2003 Honda Insight – 53 mpg(e)

This one is a classic variation and it is probably the least powerful among the members of this list. It has a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine. Its manual transmission lets it produce 67 horsepower (slightly lower than its continuously variable-speed automatic transmission). Its design is also vintage because of the period in which it was manufactured. This model is particularly economical on highways – 59 mpg(e). You are expected to spend around $850 on fuel, but this vintage car lets you extend your savings significantly. Precisely, this saving can reach above $3,500 over 5 years. It is commendable that this model is included in this list, but it keeps maintaining its position tightly. Besides that, Honda Insight shares this place with another fresh car – the 2025 Kia Niro FE. This image shows several differences between these models.

5. 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Blue – 52 mpg(e)

This place is spectacularly competitive. It is amazing that 5 cars can be positioned here (photo will show). The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid version has a 2-liter Inline 4 engine. This engine demonstrates sheer power of 192 hp. It features a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Its fuel economy is 52 mpg(e) with highway area surpassing city roads. Just like the earlier vintage vehicle, buying this model helps you financially in the long-term. Unexpectedly, 2022 Honda Insight has caught up with Hyundai in this category. The 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE shows similar indicators. Likewise, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid demonstrates comparable performance.

6. 2025 Toyota Camry HEV FF LE – 51 mpg(e)

Another top-tier JDM vehicle that was renewed showed up in this list. This brand-new model has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Typically, car enthusiasts know this model’s power scale. It has undergone several modifications without losing its triumph. Expectedly, you have to spend around $900 for this model’s fuel consumption on an annual basis. With its tank being covered with 13.0 gallons, it is estimated that approximately $39 is what you need to fill the tank completely. Over a 5-year period, drivers can save $3,500 in fuel costs. This savings is compared to the average newly manufactured vehicle.

7. Several models – 50 mpg(e)

It was tough to mark one. There are literally 6 models with similar results showing up. This scenario makes it even more competitive. Four of these models came from Toyota. The remaining two are 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and 2022 Kia Niron FE. To start with the oldest model, we have to go to 2016. This is when the Toyota Prius c was discovered. With its relatively smaller 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, it’s capable of reaching 99 hp. After this, new Camry and Corolla were placed on the stage alongside with the Prius modified version. On the other hand, the 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid showed high economic fuel consumption performance. Additionally, placing the 2022 Kia Niro FE in this rank highlighted its competitiveness with other vehicles.
