Right now, we are in the middle of winter. It is a prelude to the precipitation of snow and sleet. These conditions, or even a mix of them, can spill into your car. This makes it hard to drive even for those who have been driving for decades. Unfortunately, this season can negatively affect the maintenance of any car, and most crashes happen in this season. Annual maintenance checks on your car are unavoidable. However, you should also be aware of other tips to keep your car safe and running smoothly. This article unfolds additional tips for maintaining your car in impeccable condition during winter. Let’s divide this into 3 sections:
- Preparation is the key.
- What to do before budging the car?
- Accidents… How to avoid them?
Preparation is the key
Adjusting your car to the variety of changeable weather conditions? Start with preparing your car for some unexpected twists and turns.

- Instant battery scanning. While you are driving in this season, freezing weather topples your battery power due to lower temperatures. As soon as it starts dropping, battery power will also drain faster than before. Hence, it is better to know and charge it fully beforehand.

- Tire inflation. Cold air renders a tire pressure, as it can significantly compress air molecules. In each 10°F temperature decrease, tire pressure can drop to several units (1-2 PSI). It leads to underinflation which can provoke a reduction in traction and fuel inefficiency. These consequences are lethal if the road is covered with snow and ice. Start by investing in a manual or digital gauge. Use an air pump for inflation. The recommended pressure is given in the owner’s manual book or inside the side door. Maintain it at the proper level. Tire pressure is calculated in PSI – Pounds per Square Inch. Also, do not forget about your spare tire if it is kept in your car, because the cold weather does not restrain itself from damaging this tire even if it’s not used. Additionally, you should equip your car with winter tires. Ensure they have a suitable tread. These tires will handle the snow they encounter effectively.

- Fluids. Be more attentive to the liquid components in your car. It does not matter if it is only a windshield wiper stick fluid, oil fluid or braking fluids. Fluids are just like blood in the human body – they are everywhere and must keep functioning in any conditions. So, it is better to fill them up completely.

- A tank. Cold weather can “obliterate” gasoline and make it freeze partially. That’s why it is recommended to at least keep its half fuel inside.

- Emergency kit. We cannot predict our future. Therefore, it would be better to keep necessary supplies and items inside. These are ice scraper, additional snacks, flashlights, dense/thick blankets, first-aid kit with bandages. (A list will be given in photos)

- Wiper blades. Do not skip this section. Your wiper blades can become loose if they do not meet technical requirements. They may require replacing materials.
What to do before budging the car?

- Preheating. Igniting your engine before running is important, especially if your car runs on diesel. Do not start the diesel car in cold weather. It is prohibited due to special diesel engine operation. Around 800°C degrees are required to combine fuel injection. However, it is naturally impossible to reach this level in the cold season. Glow plugs serve as assistance factors in preheating, as they help in warming up the air inside the engine. On the other hand, gasoline powered engines are not contingent upon the unexpected temperature level. Because, the fuel is devoured with the help of sparks which are produced by spark plugs. In temperatures below -20°C, gasoline ignition gets more challenging, that’s why preheating can still be done with this fuel.

- Planning beforehand. It seems general yet applicable, because this section is not even a technical one. You just need to be aware of upcoming weather conditions by staying informed via apps or TV and certain roads that are covered with salt in icy weather.

- Cleaning. Certain car models are provided with external camera lenses, and these lenses have to be cleaned alongside standard side mirrors. It is possible to optimize drive assistance features’ functionality by getting rid of snow and ice.

- Do not leave your car ignited for a long period of time. It can lead to the condition – carbon monoxide poisoning. It can be life-threatening and lethal if not prevented as soon as possible. Likewise, it occurs when your organism “swallows” excessive amounts of fumes that pump out as a result of continuous ignition.
Accidents… How to avoid them?

- No cruise control. Avoid using cruise control features as it can loosen your balance on slippery surfaces.
- No higher gears. Do not increase gear shifts casually, because your car is on the peak of its vulnerability when it encounters icy road conditions.
- No pressure. Do not exert more pressure on brakes or throttle by unexpectedly accelerating. Slowly heading out is your best option not only in winter, but anytime.
- As long as possible. Try to maintain a longer distance with other cars, as it can reduce the probability of car crashes due to sliding.
- No black ice. This ice is extremely dangerous to go through with your car, because its surface is much more slippery compared to its default version
- Patience. By being more patient you keep your attention and that’s important.
- Knowledge is power. Being aware of your car’s features (Driver-assistance features, ABS, traction control, helps in maintaining your health and extending your car’s life longevity.
While these precautionary actions are efficient on icy slippery surfaces (or generally in this cold season), drivers are recommended to be informed about weather conditions. For example, visibility is turned off when it comes to foggy weather and drivers must stop and pull off the road until it becomes clear.
The best battle is the battle that is never fought
It is important to know when you are required to stay home. Even though your car is equipped with all necessary supplies for emergency situations, you can still infer this option. The weather can be critically unpredictable, and it cannot be overlooked or underestimated.
