The 1960th year was a period when one of the most dominating champions of this era emerged. This model is called Lancia Delta, and it literally devoured others in global rallying championships.
Until the 1990th, Lancia Delta had taken the “Champion” title for at least 11 times (in the World Rally Championship). This unfathomable record shows the incredible power of this vehicle in the previous period. I am only talking about the first outdated generation of this model. Meanwhile, Lancia drivers took the highest title at 14 events of the European Rally Championship.

Previously, Delta S4 rally vehicles had been equipped with a traditional supercharger called Volumex. It was still featured with the best suspension system. However, they decided to modify this model. Engineers conducted an experiment by combining this supercharger and turbocharger on this car. As a result, the Delta HF awakened with its sole turbocharger.
This modification surpassed its ancestors by launching a four-wheel-drive transmission. After a year of production, Delta HF 4WD underwent another transformation. It changed to the Integrale in 1987. This Integrale embodied the “supremacy” title by winning the World Championship in 2 consecutive years.

In its debut, the Lancia Delta HF won in Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo in 1987. This event was set up to demonstrate technical innovations in the automotive industry by organizing a rally. The victory was achieved with the help of Italian rally driver – Massimo Biasion. I have to mention this. Unparalleled models like Mazda 323, Ford Sierra XR4x4, BMW M3, Opel Kadett GSi, and Renault 11 Turbo took part in this event.
Even though it seemed to be the impeccable vehicle for the Championship with its triumph, it still could not handle the suspension. Because its brake system was small and limited. The car’s size severely limited maintenance. Its compact size restrained extra installation. As a result, it was a mundane task for technicians to utilize after-market parts. Not only was it used for racing purposes, but it still retained its constant position as a family hatchback.

In 1988, this model won 2 events. French rally driver Bruno Salby participated in the Monte-Carlo event and took the highest title. Consequently, Markku Alen represented Lancia in Sweden, and he also crossed the finish line first. After this, the world was destined to meet the HF Integrale “8v” in Portugal. Most technical issues related to the suspension and brake system were fixed.
Lancia created one of the most complex and competitive racing cars according to the team’s leader – Cesare Fiorio. In this season, Lancia literally obliterated every racing car. Though it was only beaten by its life-long rival Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, Lancia had taken out 10 rounds out of 11.

In 1989, Lancia’s impenetrable winning streak was terminated by tough competitors. Firstly, Toyota Celica GT4 ST165 has tried to grab this spot, demonstrating unbelievable rivalry. Initially, Toyota was not able to threaten Lancia due to its mechanical failure, hence the Integrale had kept winning events.
But it did not last long as Mitsubishi, going beyond its peak performance, was the one to completely devour Lancia in the 1000 Lakes Rally. Eventually, it was decided to modify this model and the Integrale 16v emerged. The Lancia team used this model in 1990.

That year was one of a few years when the Lancia team was not able to secure a gold medal in drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships. As always, Toyota Celica GT4 ST165 put up a good fight against its rival.
Furthermore, a 16-valve cylinder triggering a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine enhanced its speed to 220 kph. To maintain its incredible success, initial Evoluzione models were introduced in 1991. These models are also called the “Deltona” or “Super Delta”.

It also launched a wider front track by appropriately reshaping bodywork. This model was able to accelerate 0-100 kph within 5.7 s. Its transverse-aligned engine used to pump out a phenomenal 207 hp and 304 Nm of torque. When it comes to fuel, it has a capacity of 57 L. It also boasts its fuel efficiency by consuming 9.9 L/100 km.

Originally, the HF Integrale Evo 2 was redesigned by Giorgietto Giugiaro. As well as constructors of Evoluzione 2 have continuously received unprecedented constructors’ titles 6 times from 1987 to 1992. What is more shocking is that its unfathomable fame and speed were praised by car enthusiasts at that time, and none of the cars (even supercars would be swallowed by this beast) were able to catch up with this model. Twin-cam engine with 1995 cc and four-wheel drive helped it to showcase an insane 212 hp, and it was turbocharged.

Evoluzione 2 was the last modified version of the Delta HF Integrale. Some people refer to this model as a beneficial investment. It has several notable features that make it an outstanding model. As an example, a water-cooled turbocharger (Garrett) with boost-drive management is installed along with a three-way catalyst and Lambda probe. Furthermore, an anti-evaporation system has been set up for canister flushing and its engine is also equipped with a Marelli integrated control system.
