Understanding Japan’s Unique License Plate System

Black plates are often used in cases where public transport carries some products that are not suitable for passengers. It is rare to meet such plates.

Putting yellow plates means that a car is a private vehicle with a 0.66-liter engine.

White plates are common, and they are used for private vehicles with a 1.0-liter (or higher) engine.

Mostly, a white license plate is visible in streets, and it is used on a daily basis. The vehicle for commercial use is equipped with reverse color – the green plate with white background. The size ratio is 1:2, and it is standardized.

1.      Place Names

As its title, it refers to a particular municipal division of a city. When you are about to register your car, its whereabouts will decide what name should be used on the plate. 106 names in Japan are hung in these identification boxes. Additionally, these names were taken from county-level divisions.

Classification number is installed to distinguish the type of particular vehicle. It differs from 0 to 9.

A)    0 – Construction vehicles such as excavators

B)    1 – Trucks

C)    2 – Cars with 11 seats or more (green with white)

D)    3 – 11 passengers for this model

E)     4/6 – Small trucks (for cargo purposes)

F)     5/7 – Cars with less than 11 seats

G)    8 – Special vehicles

H)    9 – Higher scale special vehicles

3.      Kana text

Kana text is used to customize what region the car belongs to. Furthermore, under what purpose this car initiates (commercial, private, etc.). In rare cases, kana text helps distinguish the same models. These models were bought by neighbors.  

Precisely, car renting companies can set わ or れ. Vehicles used for military purposes can only use English letters instead of kana symbols.

4.      License plate number

This number often involves 4 digits. It varies based on the customer’s preference, and some people can obtain different plate number digits through lotteries.

Apart from all of these compositions, special license plates also exist. They can be set in special vehicles. For example, rising sun plates are installed in military cars. They are also used in other government departments.

Additionally, red-striped plates are used for unregistered vehicles, and it is a common thing among car dealers. These plates are primarily renamed “Temporary license plates”.

Even though it is standard to own a white on green plate, users can obtain glowing font plates. Yet, it is complex and expensive (you may be required to pay twice as much as its standard price).
